'Roid Rage In The WWE

The WWE recently announced the suspension of ten of it's wrestlers following the reports of steroid use by one of it's wrestlers, the late Chris Benoit. This is causing a great debate in my brain. On the one hand, the WWE is so scripted in storylines, for all I know none of the other wrestlers were using steroids, but Vince McMahon can now exploit that they were for new storylines. On the other hand, if the ten were doing steroids, because the WWE is such scripted entertainment, what difference does it make if the wrestlers were following the rules of their sport or not? We know just from watching that what rules there are in the ring are made to be broken, so why should I care about this? I'm just so confused...

Yes, wrestling is scripted, however I think that Vince McMahon is doing the right thing by trying to get it out of his "sport". With all the controversy surrounding their use these days, especially after what happened with Benoit, I think that McMahon is operating as a business man...if people start thinking that this is indicative of pro wrestling ticket sales and sponsorships might wane and when you are in the entertainment business that's going to hurt you. Also, while wrestling may be scripted to an extent there is still an awfully lot of athleticism involved and therefore if using steroids gives you an edge in getting the job over someone who is legitimately working hard for the body to be able to do this then you are going to end up with the same debates as in what is happened with the MLB. Also, even if this is a scripted move it might help to discourage future incidents.
